Today, a majority of European Union member states voted to add the American mink to its list of invasive species (American mink were brought to Europe in the early 20th century to establish fur farms). This means that, once the changes take effect in 2027, the import and breeding of mink will be banned throughout the EU! It was a decision that the fur trade lobby, and countries like Denmark, have fought against for years. It is possible that countries could apply for an exemption to continue mink farming, but if granted would mean that farms could only continue at their current level, not expand, and new farms would not be allowed to open.
