As the fur farming industry declines, the industry has less money to support scientific research into fertility, nutrition, and diseases that are common in intensive confinement farms. Not too long ago, there were fur industry-funded research farms at Michigan State University, Washington State University and Utah State University. A mink research farm at Oregon State University closed shortly after an ALF raid in 1991!
Today there is only one fur industry research facility remaining in North America. The Canadian Centre for Fur Animal Research, located at Dalhousie University Agricultural Campus (2 Farm Lane) in Truro, Nova Scotia, confines hundreds of mink and foxes and conducts research with the goal of making fur farming more profitable.
