Two summers ago, activists tore down fences, opened cages and freed dozens of foxes at the Schmuecker Fox Farm in Luzerne, Iowa. What the activists likely didn’t know was that Dan Schmuecker had been operating the farm for decades without the required state permit and in violation of local ordinances (which the sheriff notified the farm about shortly after the raid).
The raid led to scrutiny by state and local government that could have shut down the farm. In this video, Benton County Supervisors hear from a Schmuecker family representative (Iowa fur dealer Kerry Baetsle) and from County Attorney Ray Lough.
Unfortunately, Schmuecker was able to obtain a permit to continue operating, and there was no penalty for operating illegally!
